Alpenliebe
Bollywood buffet at Jungfraujoch, vada pav at the foothills of Mt Titlis. Been there, done that? Here’s an upcoming Alpine destination that promises to make your Swiss holiday a memorable one — the Glacier 3000 experience.
Billionaire sports entrepreneur and Formula One CEO Bernie Ecclestone took fancy to this breathtakingly beautiful location near his Gstaad retreat and developed it into Switzerland’s finest all-season attraction. While the gentle slopes of Glacier 3000 are a skiing paradise during the winter months from October to May, it’s the ultimate trekking destination during the summer season. And for the less adventurous, there’s plenty of snow round the year for all the fun and games.
Set off on your Glacier 3000 journey from Zürich or Geneva by train, soak in the picture-perfect countryside on the Goldenpass Panoramic to Gstaad, then proceed by a post-bus to the base station at Col Du Pillon. Make the vertical ascent in a Mario Botta-designed cable car up to the Glacier 3000, which as the name suggests is at a height of 3000 metres above sea level. And let the action begin!
Zoom off in a roller-coaster on the bobsleigh track that slices through the snow or enjoy the dog sled ride with the pack of Siberian huskies in full flight. Set off on a hiking trail through the snow or take your paragliding experience to new heights. Another unique offering at Glacier 3000 is the snow bus excursion — the giant machine with caterpillar wheels, ploughing through the snow and taking you right up to the viewpoint on the edge of Glacier 3000. On a clear day, the magnificent vista offers a view of 21 Alpine peaks, including Mont Blanc and the good old Jungfrau. And with 25 kilometres of ski runs, you can ski to your heart’s content, while the kids are busy making snowmen and snow castles.
Cap the day with a Swiss fine-dining experience at the restaurant, where the F1 influence of Ecclestone is clearly visible in the trophies and posters adorning the walls. From the dry-meat-cuts-dipped-in-fondue experience to the good old raclette, this place prides in whipping out authentic Swiss cuisine, with Alphorn players lifting your spirits. Go slow on the drinks though; at this altitude, alcohol can do strange things to you. As much as it’s tough leaving the place, the beautiful journey back is some consolation. See www.glacier3000.ch.
